MATHIEU VERHAEGHE

With a background in philosophy and painting, Mathieu Verhaeghe (b. 1986, Belgium) builds his work on a dialogue between art, existentialism and humour. Within his multidisciplinary practice, marked by conceptual and performative gestures, he questions the status of the artwork, as well as his own artistry, and often deliberately explores the boundaries between painting, sculpture and the everyday object. A crucial culmination point of his approach are the Sausage Series; an ever growing ensemble of paintings, made from pig intestine filled with paint. With his radical stance towards painting, the artist questions and/or reveals the very inner nature of the medium, inevitably also expanding on the idea of its ‘death’ - so often proclaimed in art history - in a playful and witty manner. Since 2021 his work is part of the public collection at M HKA, the Museum for Contemporary Art Antwerp.
